Built in one generation
Splott was largely undeveloped on the 1880 Ordnance Survey map and fully built up by 1919, the same years the East Moors steelworks opened beside the docks. What went up was a grid of Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses, fronts facing the street and gardens behind, and those terraces still make up its streets today.
Local landmarks
St Saviour's Church, built in 1887 to 1888 on the corner of Splott Street and Carlisle Street, set back from Splott Road, belongs to that first building boom, and Splott became a parish of its own in 1893. The steelworks closed in 1978, and the site has since been demolished and partly redeveloped.
Where a terrace takes time
