A turnpike suburb
Kingsholm grew up along the Tewkesbury turnpike road, opened in 1822, which runs north out of the city as Kingsholm Road. The stucco-fronted early Victorian houses and terraces of Kingsholm Road, Kingsholm Square and Edwy Parade were laid out as a residential suburb in 1852 and 1853.

Many of the larger houses on Kingsholm Road have been divided into flats, while Edwy Parade and Connaught Parade keep rows of smaller terraced homes, Connaught Parade in red brick with bay windows. Kingsholm Square, a quiet green in the middle, is a scheduled monument over the remains of a Roman fort.
